Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape boasts a remarkable natural diversity, ranging from the lush, evergreen Tsitsikamma Forest to the rugged Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, the southern slopes of the Drakensberg and the arid Great Karoo.

It is known as the land of rolling hills, endless sweeps of rocky coves and sandy beaches, towering mountain ranges and verdant forests.

Geography

The Eastern Cape capital is Bhisho and this province was formed in 1994 out of the ‘’independent’’ homelands of Transkei and Ciskei, as well as the eastern portion of the Cape Province.

Climate

This climate is highly varied - the west is dry with little rain during winter or summer and has frosty winters and hot summers.

The Tsitsikamma to Grahamstown area, receives more precipitation, which is also evenly distributed and temperatures are therefore mild.

Further east, rainfall becomes more plentiful and humidity increases, becoming more sub-tropical along the coast with summer rainfall.

The interior can become very cold in winter, with heavy snowfalls occurring at times in the mountainous regions between Molteno and Rhodes.
