Gauteng

Gauteng is the commercial and industrial powerhouse of the country and indeed of Southern Africa. Gauteng is a cosmopolitan, multi-cultural mix of people from all walks of life and from all corners of the world.

Geography

Gauteng stretches all the way from Pretoria in the north to Vereeniging in the south.  Gauteng means (Sotho for place of gold) and was created by the ANC in 1994 after the country’s first all-race elections, uniting six regions, including part of the old Transvaal province.  Gauteng is the smallest South African province, but serves as the gateway into Africa.

Climate

Gauteng is said to offer one of the world’s best climates: summer days are warm and wind free and winter days are crisp and clear.

The nights can be chilly particularly in winter. Bring a jacket to wear in the evenings so you don’t get cold. The rainy season is in summer rather than winter. Rainstorms are often harsh accompanied by thunder, lightning and occasional hail, but they are brief and followed by warm sunshine.

Transport

Flights….Almost all international flights arrive at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, so it's highly likely that Gauteng with be your first destination on a holiday to Southern Africa.

Public Transport……Public transport is non-existent by European standards, so it is best to rent a car.

Car Hire….All the national car rental agencies are well represented.  Roads are generally in good condition, but peak hour traffic can be very busy and slow.
