Western CapeCape Town and the Western Cape have just received the 2008 best destination in Africa award, were elected the 2004 best city in Africa, in 2002 were named the 8th most creative city in the world and to boot, is a world class events destination. GeographyFrom the time Bartholomew Diaz first landed at the Cape of Good Hope, in 1488 seafarers have looked forward to the awe-inspiring sight of Table Mountain. Today, 500 hundred years later Table Mountain and Cape Town remain two of the world's most famous landmarks and sought after destinations. The Western Cape is situated on the southwestern tip of the African continent. The cold Atlantic Ocean runs along the west coast, while the warmer Indian Ocean skirts around the south coast. ClimateThe Western Cape climate is typically Mediterranean with warm, dry summers and mild, moist winters. Autumn brings on an array of bright colors which cover the vineyards, generating amazing red and burnished vistas. Winter (May to July), with the snow-capped peaks of the Boland and Cedarberg Mountains are conducive to cozy log fires. Spring (August to October) brings on the onset of the summer sun, bringing the world’s most spectacular wild flower displays ever experienced. The endless sunshine can be tiresome at times, but the ‘’Cape Doctor’’ sweeps you off your feet with its powerful south-easterly wind. Clearing the air of pollutions (hence the name ‘’Cape Doctor’’), it drapes Table Mountain with a white ‘’tablecloth’’ of cloud. AccommodationThe Western Cape has a variety of accommodation options, ranging from hotels, guest houses, boutique hotels, bed & breakfasts and game lodges. What to do?The Western Cape is a paradise of beautiful beaches, fabulous flowers, forests and magnificent scenery. Although it is not the best province for game viewing, there are a few good reserves and some lovely lodges that are definitely worth a visit. The Western Cape offers the visitor a unique cultural and natural heritage and an easy-going atmosphere - which is coupled with a first world cosmopolitan infrastructure. Enjoy the buzzing night-life of Cape Town and Stellenbosch to the serene beaches and the many exciting outdoor activities. Food and WineFabulous food – particularly Cape Malay cuisine – and some of the best wine in the world. Submit an enquiry so we can assist you in planning your holiday to South Africa. |
